Adding Pizzazz to Layered Photoshop Templates

jazzed-up-templates
Here is a quick way to add a dash of pizazz to the layered digital scrapbooking embellishments available for sale at CUDigitals. Templates are a top seller in the store, and for good reason: they let you easily create themed pieces for your kits, saving you tons of time and helping you create a strong focus for your projects. Many digital scrapbookers really love themed kits to create pages for their favorite events and milestones so having themed kits in your collection can be an important part of your design plans.
Let’s start by looking at this owl template. The template in the download is grayscale but it can be quickly recolored. (Fast instructions on this blog post). Here are the results of simply coloring in each layer. CUTE, but let’s add more!
owl1
Here’s how to amp it up!
CTRL+ Click on the layer in the layer palette to select all solid pixels (you will get the marching ants in your work area)
owl2
In the menus, choose Select>Modify>Border. Enter a pixel value that gives you a smallish inner edge to the template piece. In this example, I choose 100 px
owl3
owl4
Again in the menus, choose Select>Modify>Feather. Enter a pixel value about half the size of your border. This will soften the edges of your selection
owl5
Back in the menus, choose image>adjustments>hue/saturation (OR CTRL+U). Then move the lightness slider to the left as you look at your template piece on the screen to decide how much darker to go. Click OK when done.
owl6
This the result for the body layer:
owl7
You can then repeat this process for other layers!
BONUS TIP: After making the selection and feathering it, you can repeat the EXACT SAME lightness adjustment by hitting CTRL+ALT+U – you will get the dialog box open again with the setting moved to what you just chose – tweak it needed and then hit OK.
And in the end (with a little fiddling on border and feather sizes) you can get this:
owl8
If you like this idea, be sure to check out the HUGE selection of layered Photoshop templates we carry at CUDigitals. You can choose from over 900 different template packs in a staggering array of themes. Check them out here to launch your next digital scrapbooking kit projects.

Featured Designer - ADB Designs Giveaway and Mats Ideas

giveaway-ADB

This is week two of our feature on Diane of ADB Designs at CUDigitals. Check out last week’s post for some interesting biographical info on this great designer plus details on her sale and limited time freebie.

Last week, we learned that Diane’s Deco Mats series are among her best sellers. Here are ten fun ways you can use her mats to create interesting embellishments for your digital scrapbook kits.

1. Clip one of the solid or very lightly patterned papers from your kit to a mat for an instant embellishment. Add some inking around the edges or some stamping on the main part of the mat for extra punch.

2. Cut a “hole” out of a mat to make it into a frame

3. Resize the mat to use as a journal block

4. Resize the mat and put a saying, word art or title on it

5. resize and repeat a mat to create a border

6. Use a mask for brushes to create a stenciled inky mat

7. Use as a mask to create a stenciled look on a paper

8. Layer with other embellishments for a cluster or a frame

9. Layer multiple mats together with different papers and colors clipped to them

10. resize to make a base for alphas or date “tags”

Be sure to check out all the mats in Diane’s store here, especially while they are on sale!

Featured Designer–ADB Designs Sale and Freebie

ADB_CUD_FDsale_ad2

This week’s featured designer is ADB Designs. She joined the store just this year and here is your chance to learn a little more about her plus shop her sale and download a useful Commercial Use digital scrapbooking freebie.

Let’s start with a mini interview -

What’s Your Real Name?

My name is Anita Diane Birrell though I go by Diane not Anita.

Tell us a little about yourself!

I live in a small town in the middle of the USA on 5 acres of beautiful woods with my husband and 2 goofy English setters (Gus & Betty). My daughter and her two daughters live in a nearby town and my son lives in Florida.

How long have you been designing CU Products?

I have been designer of CU products for 2 years and started because I could not find what I wanted for my vintagy (is that a word? LOL) PU products. I focus on ephemera and "found things" but also design generic products as well.

Here is a look at some of my favorite of Diane’s commercial use digiscrap tools

Vintage Mix Brushes Vol 8Hankie Overlays Vol 1Vintage Mix Brushes Vol 5

Designer Potpourri Vol 6Delicate Doilies Vol 2Designer Potpourri Vol 4

What programs do you use?

I use PS-CC and AI primarily to design but I am always looking for the next awesome tool/plug in to use.

What is your favorite time to work?

I design during the normal work hours of 8-5 and sometimes in the evening. I try to make sure family time and design time don't conflict. I love to spend time when I am not designing with a book. I have a beautiful library my husband built for me, so I sit there in the evening and read and sip my favorite beverage: gin & tonic with a splash of lime in the summer and scotch on the rocks in the winter.

What are your best selling products?

The product that I offer with the greatest versatility, and my best selling product, is my series of mats.  Mats are an awesome tool for designers with a myriad of uses. Use them to create background mats that match your kits, of course, but in addition, you can size them down for tags or journal cards, cut out centers and create frames, use as masks for unique background papers, trim and create unique elements, use them as the foundation for creating photo masks for your kits, combine 2 or more together....you are only limited by your imagination.  I am currently working on more square mats for this series.

These are the most popular with the designers who shop at CUDigitals

Check our Diane’s entire product line HERE – you will want to bookmark her work for easy access to really useful ephemera to add a splash (or heavy dose) of vintage to your kits!

And while you’re there, you can download this fun free sample of Diane’s super popular mats – you can make SO MANY these with these mats. We hope you have fun trying them out.

Be sure to come back next week when our second feature week with Diane will include a giveaway for a $10 shopping spree in her store!

Facebook Like Gating and Freebies in the Digiscrap Community

the-end-of-fan-gating

Offering a freebie or contest entry for a Facebook Page “like” has been part of the digital scrapbook landscape for quite some time now.  When this option was first made available, it was a useful way to encourage fans to like your page. Then your fans could receive your updates for your regular products and promotions… and hopefully buy something! But changes in how Facebook delivered news from pages had an adverse effect on how many fans would see subsequent posts from a page after that first LIKE. It is now common to see marketing articles and actual page analytics with dismal delivery and engagement on Facebook (less than 5%) – even while designers and stores are actively making strides to offer engaging content, optimizing graphics for viewing, etc.

Case in point, I have a screenshot in my social marketing file on Evernote with a week of stats on Facebook where the reach was so incredibly pitiful that I made myself a note to seriously consider eliminating the CUDigitals Facebook presence all together.  It gets so tiring to keep up with the cover photo rules, optimum ad size, position & size of custom tabs, blah blah blah.

Last week, Facebook made a new policy announcement that it will no longer allow pages to “like-gate” – in other words, there will no longer be an option to install a tab that says

LIKE OUR PAGE and GET THIS FREE DOWNLOAD

You an read all the techy stuff about this change HERE.

So digi blog trains on Facebook will no longer be able to offer a freebie to fans only – they will be made available to anyone who visits the page.  Likewise, individual designers can still offer freebies on Facebook but they must be available without a “like.”

It’s not that big of a reach for me to guess that Facebook may be positioning itself to capture some of the revenue that outside apps are making now. I feel kinda bad for the companies that have built their business by offering ready-to-use tabs and plugins for Facebook pages but it is a huge lesson in Don’t Build Your House on Rented Property.

And I think there is a lesson there for digi designers and store owners who are putting a lot of effort into Facebook marketing with very little return.  Facebook can and DOES change the rules of the game often enough that it makes it tricky to keep up. Meanwhile, they are moving constantly toward a total “pay to play” model – if you want more of “your” fans to see your content, you need to pay for that. The 50-55% reach you used get for free would likely cost you more than $40-$50 with a medium sized fan base – and that’s PER POST. Ummmmmmm … I don’t think the majority of hobby level designers are making enough income to spend $40 to advertise every one of their new releases! Besides that, if a lot of their “fans” have only come for freebies, the exposure will not even pay off in sales!!

It has been my recommendation for a long time to have a newsletter and a blog if you want to have marketing success in this business. But even offering freebies to newsletter subscribers but can become very costly too, in terms of monthly mailing list costs. Well-meaning designers have unwittingly increased their mailing list costs by $50 per month because of a good freebie going viral. Unfortunately, the signup rush is NOT always followed by a subsequent wave of new customers: many people simply want the freebie and then move on to some other designer with a freebie. This has also been a part of the digi landscape since I began designing and selling digital downloads in Jan 2006.

So what is a good place for freebies in marketing??

Here are some of my current recommendations for using free download offers wisely in marketing your business.

1. Whatever place you offer a freebie, ALWAYS make sure there is an accompanying offer to look at your products, perhaps buy a discounted coordinating item and sign up to follow your blog or newsletter. See THIS ARTICLE for setting up a good blog train freebie.

2. Limit the size of your freebie. If you give away an entire kit, there is very little incentive for someone to pay full price for something else.

3. Make your freebie is unique and interesting – something that represents YOUR style. Digi scrappers have access to an unlimited stream of paper packs with some flowers and embellies thrown in. This doesn’t get your work noticed.

4. Understand that a significant percentage of people who download your freebie have no intention to buy anything else. And be aware that few people will say thank you. I think this is unfortunate but it is the reality of this industry.

5. If possible, offer a direct download of your freebie. If people have to go to another page or login to something to get it, you are less likely to keep their attention long enough to have them sign up for your newsletter or buy something else.

What do YOU think?

Do you have a method to your madness in using freebies? Or has it been a little hit or miss for you?

Keep On Learning

lifelong-learning
Over the years of being in the digital scrapbooking design industry, I have learned the importance of being a self-taught and self-directed learner. Even though there are great classes available that teach certain aspects of this business – from design skills to marketing tactics, there is no Digital Scrapbooking Design University that teaches you everything you need to know to be successful.

Oh wait, there is no University of Everything You Need to Know. But there is this awesome thing called The LIFE We Live.

Like many other devoted designers and store owners, I make an effort to hone my design skills and pursue good information on how to improve my work and business methodology. I am naturally curious and enjoy learning new things so this process has always been fun and interesting to me.

Beyond that, learning new skills is absolutely critical to success as a digital designer. Trends change, customer expectations change, software changes, platforms change. WE CHANGE. We can’t expect to keep doing the same things and always get the same good results!

In a recent article at 99U, Paul Jun says
It is the learners, those willing to open their minds and augment their skillsets, who will be poised to succeed in the future.

I could not agree with this more and have found it to be true not only in my businesses but in my personal life as well. You can bet I am not running my household the same way I was 20 years ago. Everything from how I manage information to what cleaning products we use are subject to change. I bet most people would say the same.

Some things don’t change as much – the values we hold, the emphasis we place on family and relationship – but a lot of other things are up for negotiation!

Quoting the above article again,
A desire to learn is a fruitful asset that will fuel you throughout your life. Without this unquenchable desire to grow our understanding of ourselves and the world around us, we stagnate. We become comfortable with what we know and may feel that there isn’t anything else to learn. Of course, that kind of thinking is poisonous: there is always something that we can learn that will improve how we lead our lives and do our work.

Here at CUDigitals, part of my mission is to help you keep learning about this business with articles containing links to helpful resources, tutorials on interesting ways to use the Commercial Use Digital Scrapbooking Products we sell plus tips for marketing your business. We love being a part of your design process and appreciate your support of our store. THANKS for shopping with us, subscribing to our newsletter and following us on social media!
